Let’s take action this Disability Pride Month! We’ve put together some ideas to get us started.
1. Advocate for a better Canada Disability Benefit
- Call, email, or write to your Member of Parliament. We have a template you can use.
- Ask them to increase the amount of the Benefit. $200 a month is not enough.
- Share your thoughts about the draft Canada Disability Benefit Regulations.
2. Reflect on how to be an effective ally
- Read Inclusion Canada’s toolkit – Ways to make your community more welcoming and inclusive: Advice from people with an intellectual disability
- Share the toolkit with your family, friends, faith community, school or workplace.
3. Learn from people with disabilities
- Follow artists and influencers with disabilities on social media. Visit the This is Ableism page of our website to find content creators
- Read a book written by an author with a disability
- Listen to a podcast created by people with disabilities. The Invisible Institutions Podcast is a great one to start with.
4. Ask political candidates about disability rights
- Some communities are getting ready for provincial elections.
- Ask political candidates about their commitment to disability rights:
- What are their plans for inclusive education?
- What about inclusive, accessible housing?
- And employment and fair wages for people with disabilities?
