How Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying has gone too far
Assisted suicide is a deeply personal and sensitive issue for people and their loved ones. The consequences are permanent. You can’t reverse death.
Many people with disabilities and their families have contacted Inclusion Canada sharing their anxieties about Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) system.
The Federal Government is now considering expanding MAiD again when a section of the law already discriminates against persons with disabilities. People with disabilities and their families deserve the same protection, hope and opportunity to live a good life as every other citizen.
People with disabilities are suffering from economic and social issues that governments have failed to address. From food, housing and income insecurity, inadequate access to health and community services.
What has been Canada’s response to this poverty, lack of supports and isolation? Put lives at further risk by making assisted suicide available exclusively for people with disabilities.
Everyone in Canada deserves a clearer understanding of MAiD and its implications. Canada’s elected officials should be helping improve peoples lives instead of ending them.
